Knocked Out Tooth

A knocked-out, or avulsed, tooth is a serious dental emergency that calls for immediate professional attention. The chances of saving your tooth depend on how you handle the first few minutes after the emergency and how quick and accurate your dentist is.

At Ulladulla Dental Centre we have same-day emergency appointments to cater to your needs as soon as possible.

Knocked out permanent tooth

  • Secure the tooth by picking it up by the crown. Do not touch the root as this can affect re-implantation.

  • Rinse the tooth with clean water for no more than 10 seconds to remove all foreign matter. Do not brush or scrape.

  • Gently re-implant the tooth into the socket and gently bite down on a clean towel.

  • Go to your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.

Knocked out baby tooth

  • Secure the tooth by picking it up by the crown.

  • Rinse the tooth with clean water for no more than 10 seconds to remove all foreign matter. Do not brush or scrape.

  • Soak the tooth in milk, saline solution, or saliva on your way to the dentist. Let your dentist handle re-implantation. Do not attempt to re-implant the tooth yourself as this can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.

  • Go to your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.

First Aid Steps

It is important to understand that the first-aid steps offer temporary relief but do not solve the problem. To properly handle a knocked-out tooth, you must seek the help of your trusted Ulladulla Dental Centre dentist.

Further, the first-aid steps for a knocked-out permanent tooth and a knocked-out baby tooth are different. Know which is which before administering the first-aid steps. It might help to know that most children aged 12-13 have a complete set of permanent teeth.

Treatment At Ulladulla Dental Centre

The treatment process begins with an X-ray to determine if the tooth is properly re-implanted. Other tests to determine bite and capacity will also be conducted.

If your dentist needs to re-insert the re-implanted tooth, a splinting technique will be used to keep it in place. This will stay for days to weeks depending on the severity of the case.

For unsuccessful re-implantation, Ulladulla Dental Centre offers tooth replacement options such as dental implants and bridges. We will be with you every step of the way.
