What Causes Teeth Discolouration?

There is no single universal tooth colour. Everyone is born with different shades. Your genetic makeup determines your natural colour.

Genes aside, there are there other factors that affect the colour of your teeth. Excluding the natural process of ageing, your teeth may suffer discolouration due extrinsic factors such your diet.

There are foods that easily stain the teeth including:

  • Coffee

  • Citrus/Acidic Food

  • Tea

  • Soda

  • Wine

  • Soy Sauce

  • Sweets

  • Berries

Stains left after eating these foods can be removed with proper brushing. However neglect and poor oral hygiene do the reverse.

If your discoloured teeth are not yellowish, the cause of discolouration might be intrinsic. Intrinsic factors that lead to teeth discolouration include:

  • Drugs – Tetracycline intake of pregnant women during the second trimester or intake when you were 8 years old or younger.

  • Fluoride – Too much fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, a condition in which white spots or lines develop on the teeth.

  • Tooth Trauma – Internal bleeding of the tooth during accidents can cause discolouration.

  • Dentinogenesis Imperfecta – A rare condition that causes teeth to be grayish, amber, or even purple.

Teeth Whitening Options at Ulladulla Dental Centre

At Ulladulla Dental Centre, we have in-office home teeth whitening options for our patients.

The in-office whitening option takes place under the close observation of your dentist. The bleaching gel used has higher concentration compared to the take home option. The result is significantly faster compared to at-home teeth whitening.

For home teeth whitening, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth using a special putty. The impression will be used to create your custom-made teeth whitening trays. Once ready, you can bring your custom-made whitening trays and a peroxide-based gel home with you. You now have the liberty of treating yourself in the comfort of your home, without the need to visit the dentist.

Teeth Whitening Preparation

In both types of teeth whitening, your teeth should be professionally cleaned first to achieve best results.

A dental exam will be performed to determine if you are an ideal candidate for a teeth whitening. Pregnant women and gum disease sufferers, for example, are not ideal candidates.

Cavities must first be treated to avoid teeth irritation from the bleaching gel. For the home whitening option, personalised trays are manufactured, which you have to wear for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night. In just a week, your teeth’s appearance will improve by 4-5 shades.

For in-office whitening, a cheek retractor will be inserted in the mouth to expose all the teeth visible when you smile. Then the teeth whitening procedure commences.
