Children's Dental Emergencies
Unfortunately, children are not excused from dental emergencies. In fact, they are more vulnerable to them.
Their carefree and explorative nature can make them easy victims.
Hence as parents, it is important that aside from knowing the right first aid steps, you also have a trusted go-to dentist in Ulladulla.
At Ulladulla Dental Centre, we cater to children’s needs including children’s dental emergency. A same-day emergency appointment is available so we can relieve your child’s pain and ease your worry as soon as possible!
Common Dental Emergencies Of Children
As mentioned, it is important to know the proper first aid steps for emergencies. Your child’s dental health not only depends on your dentist but also on how well you manage the first few minutes after an emergency.
To help you out, we have listed the most common dental emergencies of children and their first aid steps. Remember, first aid steps do not solve the problem; they simply provide temporary relief before you reach your dentist.
Toothache
Make sure that there is no food left in your child’s mouth. Help him/her brush and floss his/her teeth thoroughly.
Let your child rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash or a saline solution.
To minimise pain, apply clove oil on the aching area. Never give aspirin to those below 18 years old nor put it on the aching area as this could cause a chemical burn.
Apply a cold compress against the area.
See your dentist immediately.
Knocked-out Tooth
Know if it is a permanent or a baby tooth. If you are not sure, let your dentist handle re-implantation.
Secure the tooth. Pick it up by the crown, never touch the root.
If there is dirt or foreign matter on the tooth, clean it with running water. Do not scrape, brush, or rub.
Soak the tooth in milk, saline solution, or saliva on your way to the dentist.
See your dentist within 30 minutes of the emergency.
Broken braces
Rinse your child’s mouth to remove all broken braces.
Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently move the wire into place. Do this slowly to avoid breaking the wire.
Cover the ends in cotton or gauze on your way to the dentist.
See your dentist immediately.
